Pro-Abortion 2nd collection in many parishes this weekend November 21-22
(Controversy Continues Over the Catholic Campaign for Human Development)
This weekend November 21-22, many parishes will take up the annual 2nd collection for the Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD).
The campaign is funded by parishioners across the U.S. and administered by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops in Washington, which gives out grants to local organizations that help the poor and needy (some of them quite worthy recipients). While normally a 2nd collection goes towards important and faithful Catholic-based programs, ministries, or causes, the CCHD sadly is not one of them.
As pro-lifers have known for decades, the controversial CCHD has been found awarding grants to:
Questionable CCHD grants are nothing news, as this 2008 Catholic News Agency reported on how a CCHD grant was given to a community organizer group led by Barrack Obama in 1985.
Despite a 2009 review by U.S. Bishops, the CCHD’s problems remain.
As always, know what you are giving toward.
What can you do?
- Contact your pastor and ask him if they participate, and if they do, request to cancel the CCHD second collection (pastors have the authority to do this on their own). Also ask him to eliminate next year’s CCHD collection envelopes mailed parishioners.
- Refrain from giving to this second collection and encourage your family, friends, and ushers to do likewise.
- Find other ways to give to help the poor and needy. (Missionaries of Charity and Missionaries of the Poor are great local examples)
- Contact Bishop Peter Jugis and encourage him to withdraw the diocese from the CCHD campaign due to the campaign’s collaboration with immoral groups (keep the funds for local poverty programs). You can contact the bishop at the e-mail link or address below:
